RE ENGAGE
“Because a good chat means the world. We know these past few months have been tough for everyone. But, the truth is, living through the pandemic when you’re on your own can feel unbearably lonely at times. After all, doesn't everyone need someone to chat to?
This is why we’ve launched call companions – a free service for older people who live alone and feel they could do with a friendly phone call every week or two. What’s great is that the same person calls every time so, gradually, you get to know one another. Whatever you chat about, it helps lifts your spirits. Makes you feel whole again and more connected to the world.
How it works
One of our volunteer call companions will phone you at a time that suits and you might chat weekly or every other week, depending on what you've agreed. The calls last for half an hour or so and we'll try to match you so you have interests in common. The service is completely free and lasts as long as you want it to.
To be eligible for a call companion you should be living alone or in sheltered housing and have difficulty getting out in normal times. However, we do consider applications on a case-by-case basis, so if your circumstances don't completely meet our criteria and you would like a call companion, please do apply.
Just give us a call on 0800 716543 (calls are free).”

BLIND VETERANS UK
Blind Veterans UK is the national charity for ex-Service men and women with severe sight loss.
Founded in 1915 in response to blinded soldiers returning from the First World War, and previously known as St Dunstan’s, Blind Veterans UK has supported tens of thousands of Armed Forces and National Service veterans to rebuild their lives after sight loss. While Blind Veterans UK initially cared for veterans blinded in active Service, today they help veterans no matter what caused their sight loss.
They help veterans to learn vital life skills and give them the tools they need to be safe in their own homes. Blind Veterans UK has a network of community support teams all over the UK who give blind veterans the rehabilitation and training they need closer to them, either in their own home or in their local area. They also have two dedicated centres in Brighton and Llandudno that provide vital rehabilitation, training and respite care to promote independence and well-being. As well as providing free specialist equipment, they also support veterans to find new hobbies such as cooking, art or a new sport.
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the charity has adapted its service to support its 5,000 beneficiaries. They are still receiving applications for new blind veterans who could be entitled to support. If you or someone you know is entitled to Blind Veterans UK’s free support, then please call 0800 389 7979 or visit blindveterans.org.uk.
